On a distant world, the old gods had come into their twilight
hour. In dying, two of these old gods gave birth to new worlds: Balduur’s atoms
became the world of New Genesis, a place of peace and learning; and the warlike
world of Apokolips sprung from that which was once a sorceress.
These worlds are populated by the new
gods, scientifically advanced and capable of building fantastic
cities—or deadly weapons of war. After fighting a deadly clash that devastated
both worlds, Apokolips’ ruler, Darkseid,
offered his son Orion in exchange for New Genesis’ ruler Izaya’s young boy.
These boys were held as hostages for peace between the two worlds. Of course,
Darkseid did not really desire peace, but merely time to plot a further
strategy. Meanwhile, the boy, dubbed "Scott Free" began a program of rigorous
military training on Apokolips; he would later put it to good use as
Mister Miracle.
